Philharmonia Orchestra

The Philharmonia Orchestra is one of the world’s leading symphony orchestras. Combining excellence and innovation to achieve its mission to create the orchestral experience of the future, led by Principal Conductor, Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Every member of the Philharmonia gives their all to contribute to the renowned Philharmonia sound. Founded in 1945 at the advent of the recording era and defined by such major artistic leadership as Otto Klemperer, Herbert von Karajan, Ricardo Muti, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Christoph von Dohnányi. The Orchestra has premiered works by Richard Strauss, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Errolyn Wallen, Laufey and many others. Today, the Orchestra works with some of the world’s greatest musicians to create projects that unite and inspire. In the 2023/24 season, violinist Nicola Benedetti and singer Julia Bullock are Featured Artists, and sarod virtuoso and producer Soumik Datta is Artist in Residence.

Resident at the Royal Festival Hall in the heart of London, with residencies throughout the UK, the Orchestra also tours across the globe, performing in the world’s great concert halls – from Vienna to Tokyo, from New York to Sao Paolo. Since its inception, the Philharmonia has been committed to innovation, embracing emerging technologies from the LP in the 1940s to VR and AR today to bring musical experiences of the highest quality to a worldwide audience. The Orchestra’s extensive catalogue includes many benchmark recordings, streamed performances, and the scores for hundreds of films and video games. Their recording of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 is travelling through interstellar space on board the Voyager spacecraft.

The Philharmonia’s award-winning Learning & Engagement programme empowers people to engage with and participate in orchestral music. The Emerging Artists Programme commits to nurture the next generation of instrumentalists, composers and conductors, with a focus on increasing diversity within the classical music industry.

The Philharmonia is a registered charity. It is proud to be supported by Arts Council England and grateful to the many generous individuals, businesses, trust and foundations who make up its family of supporters.
